Letter to NEST+m Students & Families from Mark Berkowitz, Week of September 19, 2016

Dear NEST+m Students & Families,

This week we begin our 7th day of instruction and our first five-day instructional week.  Thank you for your feedback and collaboration during these opening days of our school year.

Families of current 5th graders: NEST+m Lower Grades Guidance Counselor Sarah Liogys will be supporting all 5th Grade students and families through the NYC DOE Middle School application process. We will be hosting a series of tours for current  and prospective students and families. (Current NEST+m 5th Grade students do not need to complete the NEST+m entrance exam—you will, however, need to proactively apply for NEST+m 6th grade admissions via the NYC DOE Middle School application).

Citywide HS Admissions Fairs begin on Saturday 9/24 and Sunday 9/25: For more information related to HS Admissions Events, please see:

Families of current 12th graders: As communicated last week, Nataliya Kisina, our Director of College Counseling has needed to take leave three months earlier than expected. We send positive thoughts and best wishes to Ms. Kisina & her family during this time.

In our week ahead an experienced guidance counselor will be joining the NEST+m community to serve as our interim Director of College Counseling. She will implement the college application systems and calendar already planned by Ms. Kisina.  As soon as she is on board we will write to 12th grade students and families so that we may introduce her to our community and begin to schedule whole-grade, family and individual outreach.

Family Outreach Meetings

This week we continue our series of family outreach meetings. We are all members of the NEST+m community: all NEST+m families are welcome to attend any of the sessions listed below as well as all other family-oriented events on the NEST+m calendar. These sessions are intended to provide a pro-active opportunity for the NEST+m administrative team to listen to groups of parents and students so that we may be responsive to particular interests or needs.

Monday 9/19: South Asian Families Outreach Meeting

Wednesday 9/21: Black/African American Families Outreach Meeting Thursday 9/22: Muslim Families Outreach Meeting

Monday 9/26: LGBT Families Outreach meeting

Save the Date for Curriculum Night: Wednesday 9/28—5pm to 8pm exact schedule to be distributed later this week.

Thank you for helping us make this a great school year. Thank you for your ongoing support and communication.
