Letter to Students and Families, Week of March 18, 2019

Dear NEST+m Students & Families,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

As we enter the final two weeks of March, please help us to achieve our goal of 100% participation in the annual NYC Department of Education School Survey.

This survey is used by current students & families, prospective students & families, prospective employees, and the DOE itself to gauge our school’s climate and culture.

Your voice matters. Your feedback matters.
For more information, please VISIT THIS LINK

Tips to get it done online:

  • You can look up your code once you select your language preference
  • Enter “New Explorations Into Science Technology and Math” not NEST+m
  • Child’s birth date must be entered in this format: 00/00/0000
  • Only 1 survey is needed per household, so if you have siblings just use the code for the eldest child
  • If you have child(ren) at another school you will need to do 1 survey for each school
  • Take 10 minutes and PLEASE fill out your survey TODAY!

Please join me in congratulating:

  • Black Student Union (BSU): NEST+m’s Upper Grades Black Student Union for its powerful presentations to students in Grades 6-12. Our student-led assemblies took place last Wednesday. They were personal, local, immediate and powerful. The work of confronting bias and celebrating the strength of our students’ experiences is central to our school.
  • Family Friday: Thank you families for joining our K-2 classrooms for this past week’s dynamic Family (Thursday) launch to our Spring Science Fair. What a wonderful demonstration of hands-on & minds-on learning with our families as on-site partners!
  • MathCounts: Last weekend NEST+m ‘s Middle Grades Math team completed in the State MathCounts competition. NEST+m’s team finished 5th among 59 schools. Thank you teachers Johanna Cinquagrana and Joshua Councilman for leading our students. Congratulations to Paul Gutkovich, Andrew Li, Haokai Ma, and Kathleen Zhang.  Alternate Julia Kozak and Individual Charles Hua also traveled to Albany and competed individually.
  • Upper Grades Debate Team: In its first year, our Upper Grades Debate team finished in 1st Place in the NYC City Championships, Novice Division. They are now eligible for the NY State competition and will be ready to enter the intermediate/open division next year.  Thank you teacher George Basely for leading our students in this first year of Upper Grades Debate.
  • Middle School Public Debate Program: In the Big Apple division, NEST+m received the 2nd Place Award for School with the Highest Win Percentage. In the Empire division, NEST+m received the 3rd Place Award for School with the Highest Win Percentage. Malka Lubelski, Maya Brener, Rebekah Fabella, Jack Washburn, Taj Chhabra and Satvik Agnihotri received top team and speaker awards. Congratulations to our students and coaches JC Heath and Esther Chon.
  • Middle Grades Jazz Band: During the first weekend in March NEST+m’s middle grades jazz band performed at the Brooklyn Music School Middle School Jazz Festival. It was NEST+m’s 6th time at this festival. Each year a special guest artist is present. That artist listens to the band play and offers feedback, they also perform for the students, and join in a student jam session. This year, the artist was alto saxophonist Donald Harrison. Thank you teachers Pieter Voorhees and Craig McGorry for creating this learning opportunity for our students.

PSAT: On Wednesday 3.20.2019, NEST+m’s 10th grade students will take the PSAT in regular-time and 1.5x testing sessions. Double Time Testing will take place on Thursday 3.21 & Friday 3.22

SAT: Wednesday 3.27 for 11th grade students will take the SAT in regular-time and 1.5x testing sessions. Double Time Testing will take place on Thursday 3.28 & Friday 3.29.

Thank you for your ongoing support and communication.

In Partnership and Support,

Mark Berkowitz
Principal

Important notes about our 2018-2019 📅School Calendar📅

As you plan your family’s activities, please visit our Calendar page of the school website. You will see a Google calendar of our school events as well as other important items, such as the A/B Calendar, the Department of Education Calendar as well as the June New York State Regents Exam Schedules.
The June Regents exam testing schedule (June 18-25, 2019)  is very late this year; some 8th grade students and Upper Grade students are going to have Regents exams during the last week of school. 12th grade and 8th grade graduation ceremonies are going to be on June 26th, the very last day of school! Please keep this schedule in mind as you make your family’s summer plans.
